
Description
This brief presentation introduces Medela’s Symphony PLUS breast pump, designed and verified by clinical research to help mothers of preterm and term babies produce significantly more milk in less time. After describing observations of newborn sucking patterns and how they are integrated into Symphony PLUS technology, discussion highlights maternal milk production outcomes from three clinical research studies. Additional topics include instructions for use and cleaning as well as other evidence-based practices for human milk initiation and maintenance.
Objectives
Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to:
- Describe and explain differences in neonatal sucking patterns in the first few days of life and after secretory activation.
- Explain the purpose and use of the INITIATE and MAINTAIN pumping programs in Symphony PLUS.
- Identify when a mother should switch from the INITIATE to the MAINTAIN program.
- Describe how to operate and clean the Symphony PLUS breastpump.
- Articulate at least 6 evidence-based strategies for human milk initiation and maintenance.
