
Description
This course provides up to date information about breast feeding and human Milk. Examining medical rationale for breastfeeding, international acceptance of the positive impact of breast feeding, and the goals for successful breast feeding, this presentation provides strong information about the positive impact of breastfeeding. Learning the ten-step model for breastfeeding gives the student specific information of how to address the breastfeeding patient, with breastfeeding concepts elucidated. Upon completion of the module and the associated quiz, the student will earn a completion certificate, suitable to add to student portfolios.
- This course contains three separate lessons, with a short quiz at the end of each lesson.
- An overall score of 70% or higher is required to receive credit for this course.
- Quizzes may be taken more than once for an improved score.
- You will be required to complete an evaluation at the end of this course.
- A certificate will be available after the completion of the course evaluation.

Diane Spatz is a Professor of Perinatal Nursing & the Helen M. Shearer Professor of Nutrition at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing sharing a joint appointment as a nurse researcher and director of the lactation program at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and the clinical coordinator of the CHOP Mothers’ Milk Bank.
Objectives
Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to:
- Describe the rationale of why human milk and breastfeeding are public health issues.
- Describe the Spatz 10 Step Model for Vulnerable Infants, including the development of the program, the science behind the model, and the international acknowledgment of the model.
- List five reasons that human milk should be viewed as a medical intervention.
- Understand the role of technology in breast feeding when mother and infant are separated.
- Articulate the indications for use of the nipple shields, and correct methods for usage.
