Description
Produced by Paula P. Meier, RN, PhD., this 1.5 hour class provides the evidence supporting The Joint Commission’s Core Perinatal Measure for exclusive breast milk feeding in the hospital. Topics will focus on arming clinicians with research-based updates on the protective qualities of colostrum, the physiology of establishing adequate maternal milk volumes, uniquely human infant sucking patterns, risks of supplementation with formula and risks associated with pacifier usage.
This course contains three separate lessons, with a short quiz at the end of each lesson.
- Quizzes may be taken more than once for an improved score.
- You will be required to complete an evaluation at the end of this course.
- A certificate will be available after the completion of the course evaluation.
This program has been approved for 1.5 contact hours; provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, CEP 13692.

- Describe the role human milk plays in reducing the risk of obesity.
- Recall the evidence to support exclusive breast milk feeding during the maternity hospitalization.
Lesson 2
- Explain how colostrum stimulates growth of intestinal enterocytes.
- Describe the critical period for feeding colostrum in mammals.
- Define initial feeding volumes of the healthy breastfed infant.
Lesson 3
- Describe the role prolactin plays in establishing maternal milk volumes.
- Counsel a breastfeeding mother regarding the frequency and length of breastfeeding sessions.
- Explain the risks of pacifier use in decreasing maternal milk volume in the early post-delivery period.
